Obafemi Awolowo University students cry out as exams begin despite the on-going ASUU strike

Obafemi Awolowo University students cry out as exams begin despite the on-going ASUU strikeStudents of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Monday, began exams for the 2017/2018 second semester despite the ongoing strike action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU, led by Biodun Ogunyemi, had embarked on industrial action on November 4 to protest poor funding of universities and non-implementation of agreements reached. While other academic activities were suspended in various universities, some departments in OAU carried on because they had lecturers who were not members of ASUU.Students of Botany, Zoology and some foreign languages have been affected by the strike action, their colleagues in English and Literary Studies department have been receiving lectures and sat for exams on Monday. . According to Abiodun Olarenwaju, the university’s public relations officer, the school calendar would not be extended.“There’s nothing that suggests we are going to extend any calendar. Don’t let us be speculative, when we get to the bridge we will cross it.The senate of the university is in charge of the academic activities, if they find it find to extend, they will and if not, there’s nothing anybody can do about it.Let’s keep our fingers crossed and don’t let us be speculative. Whether they are going to extend it or not has not stopped the students from reading, they should read” he said in December.See social media reactions by some affected students below...Me, dragging my last remaining brain cells to my impromptu exam. What is worse is their lecturers stopped coming to class immediately the strike started and all of a sudden, last week, their lecturers became serious.— Oluwapelumi (@auntypelz) January 13, 2019You claim Best Nigerian University yet you will hold exams despite inadequate lectures been given to students.#Istandwithlecturesbeforeexams #ASUU #GreatIfe #OAU pic.twitter.com/lCwwqIUSBe— Ugly Fat Guy (@otunba_zaddy) January 13, 2019OAU on fire... I just have a few questions: is there nobody to fight for us? Is there nothing that can be done? Is this how far we have been marginalised and rendered powerless?— Praximus (@MDPrax) January 14, 2019why is nobody talking about the situation of things on OAU campus, where students will be forced to start exams under duress, without proper lecturing, our mental health is important as far as our grades.#Istandwithlecturesbeforeexams.— JustAisha (@OyinHassan) January 13, 2019They will postpone OAU examsBreaking News:Timetable has been released pic.twitter.com/iZYZQRzyyF— The litigator (@psammy_f) January 12, 2019The post Obafemi Awolowo University students cry out as exams begin despite the on-going ASUU strike appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
