Old Trafford boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is confident that Mason Greenwood will not let his early success go to his head as he praised Man United’s academy for the way they educate young players.

Greenwood scored his 16th goal of a sensational first season as a senior player against Aston Villa, and is already being talked about in the same way United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney was when a teenager at Everton.

Rooney, at times, attracted the wrong sort of attention for off-the-pitch activities, and there have been plenty of exciting youngsters who have lost their way. But Solskjaer is convinced Greenwood has the personality to make the most of his talent and he said ahead of United’s game against Southampton tomorrow: “At that age you’ve got so much energy. If we had a day off, he’d play football with his mates. [He is a] fantastic boy, loves football and gets the result and rewards for his hard work.

“We know what he’s capable of,” Solskjaer added. “And always trusted him to be a part of this squad and chip in with performances and goals.

“He’s just a natural footballer and when you put natural good footballers with better footballers, that gives him more opportunities to show his qualities. The club know what they are doing when they’re educating players.”

United are on the rise, but Solskjaer is as calm now as he was in the tough times. “We have had an up-and-down season. The players have stuck to the task in hard times. Now, it’s time to keep feet on the ground, keep working, don’t believe in all the hype and praise, same as I don’t believe in all criticism when you don’t do well.”
