VIDEO: Lyon beats Wolfsburg for fifth straight Women’s UCL

Olympique Lyonnais Feminin maintained its dominance of Europe beating German power Wolfsburg 3-1 in Spain on Sunday in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final for its fifth consecutive continental title.

Lyon, which has won seven of the last 10 Champions League crowns, also beat Wolfsburg in the finale in 2016 and 2018.

Veteran French World Cup striker Eugénie Le Sommer opened the scoring for Lyon Sunday in the 25 minute, slotting her own rebound past Friederike Abt after the Wolfsburg keeper saved Le Sommer’s initial shot:

Lyon looked as though it would roll to victory when it doubled its advantage on the stroke of halftime through Saki Kumagai.

The Japanese midfielder got a little fortunate when Wolfsburg’s Ingrid Syrstad Engen poked the ball off the foot of teammate Amel Majri and directly to her, but there was nothing lucky about Kumagai’s long-range, left-footed effort:

Wolfsburg made it interesting, though, cutting Lyon’s advantage in half on a goal by Alexandra Popp with more than a half-hour left to play.

The two-time European champions never got any closer than that, though, with Lyon substitute Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir putting the match out of reach with just two minutes of regular time to go.

Following a failed clearance off a Lyon corner kick, the Iceland international and former Wolfsburg player stayed onside, extended her leg and redirected Le Sommer’s wicked shot past Abt to clinch the trophy:
